On May 15, 2012, Ashley N. Steere was elected to membership in UVM’s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The nation’s oldest and most prestigious honor society, Phi Beta Kappa was founded at the College of William & Mary in 1776 to encourage free inquiry and recognize outstanding academic achievement in the liberal arts and sciences. UVM’s chapter, the Alpha of Vermont, was founded in 1848 and is proud to be the first chapter to have admitted African Americans and women to membership, both in the 1870s. Membership in Phi Beta Kappa is extremely selective and is recognized nationally and internationally as a mark of superlative academic achievement. Congratulations to Ashley!
